I drove by the course today, and it is a very sad sight. The course is so windy, and the trees are very small. It will take more then 20 years for those trees to grow.
Plus, I can see maybe $10,000 spent on the course. Who has the budget proposal for the course? Who wrote the request for the grant money?

I played there today with KC. It was very windy...I shot a 56 with only one birdie. The whole front range was windy today not just the course . The course from #1 tee to the basket of #18 I walked exactly 2.5 miles in about 1 hour 50 minutes. About 9 holes are good memorable holes. I would say go play it if you haven't. The area is bigger than it looks and there are many challenges out there. Tomorrow is supposed to be even warmer than today. I understand grieving the loss of Edora, but I am excited to have an18 hole course that is much more strictly a disc golf course than any other course in Fort Collins. (hopefully people walking dogs and sledders will be a smooth partnership) We were told by a dog walker that dogs can be off-leash because it is CSU property and there is no leash law. This could change?/be problematic if labs like frisbees /could be great too....it will be interesting to see how things develop over the next little while.

I shot a 52 today, I ran the first 8 holes and then joined up with a few guys just learning the course. Hole 18 is a true par 4, especially if the pond is OB. I wish there were more true par 4s out there. I had a great time, loved it, it was a beautiful day. There must of been about 50 other golfers out there too.

Cold but not much wind. I shot a 50. I was -5 going into hole 18. I took a four. Parked hole 12 for one of my birdies. Missed two putts for birdies. This course is like standing on old hole 6 at Edora (new hole 17) and just throwing 9 or 10 holes. If you like that you will love this course. I might play this course once a week. The rest of the time I will be at Edora no matter what size it is.. At 400+ft per hole, not fun for beginners or casual golfers. At 2.5 miles and perpetual winds, not fun for anyone but us diehards. That's why Edora was so good. It played to all.. Played with Danny and Pete S from Longmont. For those of you who don't know, Pete was instrumental in getting the Longmont course at Centennial park put in. And if Edora is pulled to nine. Then the course at Centennial will be my vote for the best course in Northern Colorado..

I see the excitement in some of the posts. I think this will wear off. It's like a new toy. soon the shine will be gone. With no water and no bathrooms and no shade. I can't think this will be a fun place to be on the the days where the temp is above 80. Or when the wind is blowing. Which will be a lot with it's location and nothing blocking it. Not excited yet. I need more than just baskets in a field. i.e. old CSU course behind the Hilton. I don't remember that getting a lot of play.

I know I'm going off here, just try to stay with me. At Edora if it was windy you could use it. And you could throw thumbers and big anhyzers, rollers and sidearms. At Huges it's just one long drive after another. Where is the variety? It was hyzer, hyzer, flat, hyzer, hard anhyzer, hyzer, hyzer. with all of your shots having to go 400+ you will play your best distance shot all the time. I hate to think that all the skills I have worked so hard to obtain will be put on the shelf and sacrificed for pure distance. The future players of disc golf in Ft Collins will throw far but have no skills when throwing technical shots. You will play like the course you play most.

I have driven to the new course twice, and went home both times sad and angry. The layout and course looks awful, same long hole over and over, way too much wind, no obstacles, shade, or restrooms, and the parking lot is tight. I am being a little picky with the parking lot, but I am ranting. If the trees survive, then it will take 20+ years for them to grow and make a difference. Everyone is better off going to baseball diamond and throwing for the fence, then throwing for distance across a cold windy desert field. Honestly, I don't think they could have picked a worst location. I believe in calling a spade a spade, and this location and design is one bad decision after another.
I believe that the Great Outdoors needs to understand how this grant has negatively impacted our sport for decades to come.

Wanted to go out today, but never made it. I hope to play the new course soon...especially before summer. I suspect that location will be infested with rattle snakes come warmer weather. Garret

I have to say I am rather impressed with the course. I agree with Bruce that it's kind of like a new toy, and the excitement will wear off. We can still have our voices heard at the Feb. 7 City Council meeting. Even if they don't listen we can say we attempted everything we could to keep Edora in the ground. The new course isn't perfect, but I think it has potential. In regards to the lack of obstacles (which I agree with), why doesn't the club take the money that they are using for legal representation and purchase more trees. Perhaps more mature trees? Is that a possibility? I'm just putting out a suggestion, not a critique. Instead of throwing over all the trees why not try to keep your disc low, and run the lines that are available out there? I understand this may harm the new trees. Again, this is a suggestion, not a critique. In regards to the City Council meeting I plan on asking the city to allow Edora to remain an 18 hole course for a certain time period. Let's say 6 mo.- 1 yr? During this time it would be beneficial if ALL complaints were recorded (does anyone know if they have documentation of previous complaints?), so that some sort of quantitative measure can be put on just how many people are "complaining." Personally, I don't believe there are as many "complaints" as the Parks and Rec dept claim. However, I don't have proof of this; therefore, they should be documenting EVERY complaint, and what activity it is associated with. I will play Hughes more often due to the convenience to my house, but would love the option of going to Edora. The club, or groups of players needs to organize talking points so that we don't come across as a bunch of babies crying about losing our playground. Some of the points on this board are good ones, and some sound kind of childish. We need to look professional, act professional, and be open to compromise. By doing this it will become clear that we're not a bunch of dope smoking yahoos who like to throw discs at random dog walkers in the park (these are some of the silly stereotypes being applied to us). Please, if you plan on speaking to the City Council have something well thought out to say. Don't just get up there and improvise. This will do nothing more than hurt our cause. Sorry for the rant, but felt I should bring up these points. Let's come up with solutions, NOT complaints! This will put a positive light on our sport. Let's go get 'em!!!!!

I think it is a good idea to leave Edora open for a set period to review the complaints, since it would be nice to see Parks and Rec. substantiate their claims. Of course, I prefer the 1 year over 6 months. However, this leaves them the out for removing Edora. This is why, I prefer the idea of pay to play and moving holes for safety reasons.
At this point, I don't agree with using club money for buying trees, instead of legal advice. We need legal to speak for us, rather then 20 different club members bringing up various points. This way our concerns are presented professionally from someone the hopefully deals with the city council regularly. If you do plan to speak, then please be dressed as nice as the board members out of respect.

I'd be careful suggesting the pay to play option. Personally, I play this sport because it is free. If I had to pay, I'd play ball golf. I'm afraid if that idea was brought up, we would lose 9 holes AND have to pay. I'd rather lose half the course and have it remain free. Personally, I think a request should be made to the city to allow us to put in 2 or 3 extra holes on the east side of the railroad tracks. I've heard that temp baskets were set up over there once for a tournament. Looking at the land map from the county, the city owns most of the land on the east side of the tracks where that open field is leading toward the power station. If an additional 2 or 3 holes could be put in over there, they would be completely away from the park. After playing current 17, you could walk down the trail and play the new holes, then come back and finish out on current 18. Just a thought....maybe we could atleast the get hole count back up to 12. Garret, the club/Bill tried to do that during one of the redesigns several years ago. It's not the city, but Homeland Security that has an issue with people have an excuse to be hanging out around the power station. And, to be honest, I would guess some idiot would try and climb the fence to retrieve their disc. Good idea, but that avenue has been traveled. Hammer, I think having 20+ members, and hopefully some non-members speak is much more beneficial. I say this because it's coming straight from the people, by the people. Just an opinion. And, the club probably isn't spending that much on this legal advice. At least not enough to purchase a significant number of trees? People who are planning on speaking should be dressed appropriately, and really need to have a statement written or VERY well thought out. If we get up there and start rambling about how we're constantly getting screwed over by Parks & Rec we'll get nowhere. Obviously, this point should be raised. I just don't think it should be the main point of any of the arguments. I think it would be pretty hard to argue that Edora be ripped out of the ground right away. Especially since Parks & Rec haven't given anything but hearsay about these "complaints." There are already a good number of people out at Hughes, and I really think this course will relieve a lot of the congestion at Edora.

Hughes is going to be a good course if it is in contrast to another Techincal Course in town or 2. I hate what is happening with Edora. Edora is immposible to play some days because there has been no other option in town, and the PArks and Rec board will see that moving traffic does not solve the issue of " overuse". Closing 9 holes at Edora will only shift the "overuse" to a course that has plant material that can not defend itself, it has non irrigated Native Turf that is not designed to handle the high traffic that it is going to recieve over the next few years. OR that it will be unplayable for days afetr a heavy rain or wet spring snow. Taking Edora down to 9 holes is not the answer and some times they( P&R Board) need to see for them selves results of their choices as a board. It will not be the end of the world, it is just going to be a rough year for Disc Golf in Fort COllins after SPM. I attended the Parks and Rec board meeting tonight, where they talked about the City Council wanting a stance from the Parks and Rec board about the Clousre. There was various stances from leaving Edora Open untill the plant material matures at hughes to shuting it down because my dog got hit by a disc. There a 4 Neighborhood residents to Edora on the board that would like to see it down sized, and a few that are in Favor of some sort of support to keep it open with a redesign. the Parks Dept is not against Disc golf they are following the Direction of the Parks and Rec Board.....buit the Parks and Rec board "will recommend the Closure of 9 holes at edora due to the process has been on going for 2 years and they need to stay the Course" to the City Council prior their next meeting on the 7th.... 2 years ago when they applied for the GOCO grant money for Hughes there was stipulation that Edora would be closed and that was one of the basis for approval of the grant, stated by a few members of the board others disagreed. Either way this is when the DisC Golf Community would have been most effective to put a stop to this. We should have been loud then not just the leaders of NOCO but all of us. I am to blame I was not there....Many prior to this have tried but it has been a few, there are a lot of us trying drastict measures to save Edora, as I believe in some Form it should. We are somewhat united for a cause, but where will everybody be when or if they do close it down to 9, just bitch about it or stick together and be a force that accomplishes the long term goals of all that have been aprt of NOCO over the years and get other courses built in Fort Collins? There is a ground floor to stand on now so lets get something done get involved and be heard.... I will be providing an informative and educational presentation to Parks and Rec Board, Not Parks, Not Craig, but to the Board they make the Vote on what happens in the Parks, Not the City employeed Parks Dept, It was a joke about how little they actually know about the sport. I will continue to attend the Board meetings on a monthly basis until it is understood how many Disc Golfers there are in this town and Country, for that matter. I will also stress the point that Disc Golf is a viable recreation, as is any other in this city and should be taken into consideration as a part of any future palnning. There are 18 parks scheduled in the next 15- 20 years just an FYI and right now the only sport represented in the Board meeting by citizens is Disc Golf. On the 7th the Ciy Council will mostly like support the descision of the Parks and Rec board about the Clousre of 9 holes, but this is not the end of Disc Golf in Fort COllins. I will be there in support of keeping Edora open as an 18 hole Course, I believe that it will be a 18 hole Course again at Edora from the information I have researched. Parks Policy plan 2008 and the last 5 years of minutes of the Parks and Rec board. There is support there, it just needs to be put in a light they can comprehend. I just hope that the support of Edora is well thought out and not a vigalante rant. At this point it would not serve the Disc golf Community well or allow us any room for Negotations in the future. DO not allow this destroy the futre of Disc golf in Fort Collins. Just My .02
