The PDGA State Coordinator can designate one player to go to the USDGC each year. Last year Pat Lien won the spot in a qualifying tournament held at Birds Nest. This year the qualifier will be determined through a one-round tournament at a very USDGC-style tight Johnny Roberts on Sunday, September the 4th at 2PM. The USDGC has a unique qualifying formula this year that is ratings based. Since the qualifier will not be a sanctioned event and ratings will not be determined for the round, a handicapping system will be used to determine the best score. Depending on what your current rating is (as of the August 31, 2011 PDGA ratings update) you will either be given strokes or lose strokes. An adjusted score will be used to determine the state qualifier.
Score Adjustments
850-862 subtract 6 strokes
863-875 subtract 5 strokes
876-888 subtract 4 strokes
888-900 subtract 3 strokes
901-913 subtract 2 strokes
914-926 subtract 1 stroke
927-939 add no strokes
940-952 add 1 stroke
953-965 add 2 strokes
966-978 add 3 strokes
979-991 add 4 strokes
992-1004 add 5 strokes
1005-1017 add 6 strokes
Example: Player A (rated 880) shots a -5 and Player B (rated 960) shoots a -10. The adjusted scores would be: Player A -5 (-4) = -9, Player B -10 (+2) = -8
In the case of a tie, a sudden death playoff would take place (no strokes given or taken in playoff).
You must be an active PDGA member and have a rating of 850 or above to qualify. You must be a resident of Colorado to be eligible for the USDGC spot.
The entry fee will be $20. All entry fees will be used for the winning qualifier’s entry fee and travel expenses. The first $100 collected will pay for the entry fee to the USDGC. All additional money collected past the first $100 will be issued to the qualifier upon providing receipts for either airfare or hotel.
The Course
Johnny Roberts will be played utilizing the stroke and distance rule that is now used at the USDGC. If you throw out of bounds, you will need to take a penalty stroke and re-throw from your initial lie. If there is any doubt as to whether you are in bounds or not, you should throw a provisional shot from the original lie. The out of bounds will also be tightened up at Johnny as follows:
