Hey everyone,
Danny Burdick and I were both contacted by a guy named Erich Phillips who works for a company called Reflections for Youth - reflectionsforyouth.org/. They provide housing and support for at-risk teens. Erich wants to put on a fund-raiser doubles tournament at Edora. I believe he has already paid to reserve the course for Saturday, June 27th. Lance, Danny and I met with Erich last night to discuss many of the details of the tournament. He likes disc golf, but is not familiar enough with competitive disc golf events to run the tournament himself and asked for some help in that area.
Lance and I plan to heavily involve our CSU club, the Grateful Flyers, in this tournament to raise attendance as much as possible. We think it's a worthy cause for the disc golf community to get behind. Additionally, we are envisioning this tournament as very community outreach oriented. We want to create an environment that is welcoming to both seasoned competitors and absolute beginners.
We hope to split the field into Open players and an Amateur field with two or three divisions. The format for Ams will be best shot doubles with double birdies. That means that if both players on a team make the same birdie putt, the birdie is double counted for a -2 on the hole. For Pros, we are considering a mixed format. It would probably be 6 holes of best shot, 6 holes of alternate shot, and 6 holes of worst shot. We may add additional holes to combine the total to 20, but we will not be using an extra long safari layout. We're going to leave a lot of birdies out there!
Food and music will be provided, with donations being asked for, as the event is a fundraiser. The most helpful thing for Erich right now would be sponsors. If anyone works for a company that would like to make a charitable donation to a great non profit group, let me know so I can put you in touch with him.
Other than that, I want to know what everyone thinks about the format? Questions, complaints, suggestions? Thanks everyone.
