There seems to be a lot of confusion out there concerning the redesign of the course at Edora Park that has been in the works for a while. So here's the deal with that:
As some of you may know, I've been working closely with the city of Fort Collins on a redesign of Edora park aimed at alleviating some of the worst conflict areas and appeasing the city's concerns. After nearly a year of going back and forth with design changes and spending countless hours working on the new layout, we were scheduled to move the baskets and make the switch right around the end of this month... However, after all the hard work had already been done, plans finalized and new anchors set in the ground, at the eleventh hour the city officials had an apparent change of heart. They decided to scrap the whole redesign and leave the course as it is! To those of us who have been working on this for the last year, both volunteers and city employees, this is extremely frustrating. The entire redesign was done already. The city already purchased and installed the new anchors and everything. So as of now, there is no New Edora layout or redesign happening. This is a classic example of the government doing what it does best: waste time and money, and basically jerk everyone around. The exact reasons for this strange decision remain a mystery, but I have been informed of a few factors that may have contributed to it... There were a few complaints by concerned citizens about the new holes. Also, there seems to be a growing sentiment that the new course at Hughes Stadium, which is currently in the works, will alleviate a lot of pressure from Edora when it is finished and solve most of the problems. I think that is an extremely naive and idealistic viewpoint. The Hughes course will have to be built from nothing, much like Birds Nest in Arvada. There are no trees out there yet or anything. Hopefully in 5 or 10 years it can be developed to the point that it can draw a lot of use, but for the near future, Edora is a mess and I only see it getting worse. The city management of Fort Collins just doesn't get it, when it comes to disc golf. Thus is the current state of affairs regarding Edora Park and disc golf in Fort Collins. Since I've been representing the disc golf community in this stuff, I felt obliged to set the record straight and update the public. I'm sorry I wasn't more successful. I'm sure the current NCDGC leadership group will continue to work hard to improve the state of disc golf in Fort Collins and find us more places to play.
