So for those of you that don't know, I have started a group for Disc Golf with my church high schoolers and we are having a blast. The first time we went out we basically played the first 12 holes except the water holes.
Yesterday was our second outing and we started at hole 13. My group consisted of 8 high school boys, myself and another leader. My decision to start on hole 13 was because the park was pretty full because of the amazing day and I wanted to give the students a better feel of the course by playing the rest of it and I didn't see anyone on hole 12, so I figured we wouldn't have anyone waiting behind our huge group for too long.
We waited at hole 13 for the group in front of us to finish, when a a guy shouted from the basket at hole 12, "you have to start at hole 1!" I didn't really think much of it as I wasn't too sure he was talking to us. His friend came up to our group and said, "no cutting in line, you have to start at hole 1, I have been playing here for 15 years those are the rules" very aggresively. These guys are middle aged men in their late 30's early 40's. Both of the gentlemen said that they were sick and tired of people cutting in front of them as this was a nice day and a very busy course and that there are rules posted at hole 1 that "clearly defines the rules that you HAVE to start at hole 1." I told the gentlement that I disagreed, but didn't want to argue. One of the guys exclaimed, "Good, because we are going to play in front of you anyways!"
Now about 7 years ago, this verbal confrontation would have escalated. With 8 high school students with me and trying to keep my cool, we just let the two guys and their female friend go. A funny side note, I don't think I have ever heard my high schoolers that quiet because they were in awe of how idiotic these guys were being. As we played hole 13, one of the guys came up to me on hole 14 came up to me and said, "I appreciate what you are doing, teaching DG to high schoolers" and kept babbling on about the "rules" and started talking to be about Golf. I said, "so you play ball golf? Have you ever started on the back 9?" He said that wasn't the same because ball golf is "set up" that way on purpose. After that I just walked away from the guy.
So all in all, that was a VERY good built in lesson we had as a group. Typically the disc golf community is a very friendly one. I am glad I kept my cool. We ended up having a blast. We also have two "special needs" kids with us, so we weren't the fastest group. I am well aware of this, so we let anyone that was waiting behind us basically play through. My intentions are not to hold up the whole course with our group.
Now that we have played the full course, I am planning on splitting our group up a bit to expedite our play.
I wanted to thank everyone that has emailed me regarding my group for their support. We have had over 50 discs donated so far, which has really helped.
Say hi on the course if you see us
