OK, so now the "fixing up FCHS" discussion has it's own thread, and doesn't have to piggyback on the "bent poles" topic...
So, what improvements do you all think need to happen on this course?
Should the club use our funds, or should we try to convince the school to fix it up? It may be difficult, or take longer to get them on the job, and who knows, we may do a better job anyhow.
What do you all think?
PS: I think if you're into it Evan, you should go introduce yourself to the school, and see who's in charge, and see what we can do to get that course styled out.

Yeah, I'll probably stop by the school sometime this week and see if I can track down whoever's in charge of the course... What all needs to be done there??? There is one missing basket that needs to be replaced... There are a couple messed up baskets. Hole four's basket is just kinda hanging there without a bolt (easy fix), and seven's basket is kinda bent up... It's up to the school but it seems like they should put anchors in the ground so they can lock the baskets in good, because right now they are just like staked down... What else??? Is the club willing to spend money to fix these issues if the school isn't??? Obviously we will need the schools blessing to do anything anyway, which is why we need to get a contact for over there.

I stopped by the school office and talked to the athletics department. I was told that the P.E. teacher, Mrs. Jodi Johnson, is probably the person in charge of the course, but she's gone for the next week or so. I guess we can try back after that.

I'm scheduled to meet with Jodi Johnson this Thursday, 2:30, at FCHS to discuss fixing up the course. If anybody has any suggestions or imput about what all needs to be done and how best to do that... let me know. It sounds like the school didn't even really know about the missing and broken baskets...

it might be worth seeing if the welding classes could take on the project of spot-welding the baskets so they hold up a little better against the abuse the endure. Sleeves for placements would definately curb the "case of the missing basket" mysteries.

Ok, so I had a really positive meeting with Jodi Johnson about the course and she's gonna find out what the school funding situation is right now for purchasing a new basket for hole 5. She's also going to talk to the shop teacher guy at the school and see if they can do some repairs on baskets 4 and 7. She's planning on getting some of her students out there to use the course sometime in the next few weeks so she'd like to get the course fixed up asap.
On a related note, she asked if myself or anybody else would be interested in coming out sometime to maybe work with the kids or do a little clinic or something. I'm down... if anybody else would really be into doing something like that then let me know.

I could help on certain days. It's all up to if I have the kid or not. I think that's a great idea. I was thinking that maybe we should try and get a high school league where high schools compete against each other. I don't know how committed I could be to this but I thought it would be cool. Does the club want to donate old discs to the schools, I know some of ya'll have old plastic you don't need or ever plan on using ;D ;D Just let me know what the dates and times are Evan and I'll see what I can do. Thanx for staying on top of everything out there ;D ;D

I'd be willing to give the kids some pointers, keep us updated on how thats going. That is a great opportunity to get some positive attention for the club.
Until they get that missing basket replaced, I can bring out my basket for Sunday league (once we finalize a schedule for where it will be each week).
Evan, did you talk to her about putting some sleeves in the ground? That would protect their investment out there.

speaking of fchs, basket 2 is trashed, the top pole has been broken and the entire target is in two pieces, me and cj played it sunday after leagues. it could be welded back together, though. I would also be interested in showing up for a clinic, anything to push disc golf in the area, especially with the childrens, it would be a great way to instill some good basic skills and etiquette in the youth. Everyone should learn the 360! ;D

Ok, so here's the latest on FCHS. Yes, basket #2 is broken in half, and not playable. So with two baskets gone and at least 3 others that are messed up... I've decided we need to move Thursday Doubles back over to Edora for now.
My contact with the school, Mrs. Jodi Johnson, is no longer working there... just to complicat things a little more. So no clinics or instruction stuff is in the works any longer. That is definitely something we should pursue though, at a later date.
Here is a copy of my last few email transactions with the school about fixing up the course:
Mr. Eversole, My name is Evan and I'm with the Northern Colorado Disc Golf Club here in Fort Collins. I've been in contact with Mrs. Jodi Johnson about fixing up the disc golf course there at the school. Since I last contacted her, yet another basket has been damaged. So now, in addition to Hole #5 basket being stolen, I believe there are 4 other baskets that are damaged (some worse than others). We'd really like to see the course get fixed up and the club would love to help in any way we can. I spoke with Mrs. Johnson about the possibility of other people at the school helping: If there is like a Shop class teacher... I know a few of the baskets could easily be fixed up with some minor welding. There is a member of the disc golf club who works with metal. He said he would be willing to try to fix some baskets as well, but we would need to remove them from the school and take them to his shop. We really want to encourage the growth of the sport, and having courses at schools like that is something we love to see. Please let us know what we can do to help. Evan I have filed a stolen property report with the school and we are submitting that to the insurance to see if the cost of replacing hole #5 will be covered. It would be great to have the help with the other items you mentioned, I am going to talk with our principal tomorrow and pass on your email to him as well. My last day on the job is May 29th, so after that I am going to have you communicate with him to get all this taken care of. His name is Mark Eversole 488-8003 marke@psdschools.org Thanks a lot and I will let you know what I find out. jodi

Hi, I was just wondering if any progress had been made, with regards to fixing up the Disc Golf course there at the High School? I think the basket on Hole #6 is broken now as well... it looks like the welding came undone on the big ring around the bottom, connecting it to the three leg parts. So that makes holes 4,6, and 7 needing minor repairs, and basket #5 needing to be replaced. One possible solution that might help with durability in the future would be to plant the baskets in sleeves in the ground. Most park courses, like Edora Park, are done like this. A small pipe sleeve is cemented into the ground, and then the center pole of the basket is just slid down into the sleeve and locked into place. This would help with both durability and discourage theft of the baskets. The Disc Golf Club is experienced with planting sleeves in the ground and we could probably do that if you and the school are interested. For all the repairs and the basket replacement: If it doesn't look like the school can help with that stuff right now, the Disc Golf Club can try to help with it. Just let us know. Thanks for the help! Regards - Evan Brummet

Good work Evan, keep up the diplomacy. I am considering taking FCH out of Sunday's rotation as well due to the damage on the course, as it is now two baskets would need to be brought out to play the course, which isn't a huge ordeal, but enough to consider playing another course instead. Keep me updated with the fixing process.

I met with the Principal of FCHS this morning and he seemed very enthusiastic about replacing the missing basket and fixing up the course. We walked the course so I could show him what all was messed up... I was pleased to see that somebody already fixed up #2 basket that was completely broken in half. It's welded back together, so there is only one basket gone right now... I'll see about getting the others fixed soon. - Evan
